Pali chanting: Anumodana, Paritta and More

Pali chanting: Anumodana, Paritta and More

Ahba has indicated that chanting Pali is beneficial. The chanting of Pali texts that one does not know by heart can even promote concentration because one has to be very alert and can have nothing but the texts in one’s mind.

Here are some short and extensive Pali recitations by the monks and novices of Ahba’s monastery, and by some of Ahba’s Dutch disciples.

For those who like to read along or wish to start reciting Pali themselves we can recommend this (Pali/English) Chanting Book.

Here follows a explanation about the recitations in the playlist:

  1. Two Dutch disciples had the opportunity to chant some Pali verses together in the beautiful acoustics of the Maha Bodhi Chedi during their retreat in the monastery.
  2. Anumodana is recited befor each lunch. This is a more elaborate version by the monks and novices of the monastery. Anumodana is difficult to translate, it is to rejoice in the good deeds of the other and to further encourage them.
  3. This concerns the Saturday evening recitation in the monastery, when the monks and novices, in addition to the ordinary Pali evening texts, also recite the paritta, the verses for welfare and protection, for all beings. In the playlist we start with the whole recitation as one. It is then broken down into the various parts with page numbers from the ‘Chanting Book’ so that they are easier to practise for those who want to.
